Daily Photography Gear News & Reviews Roundup – Dec. 8

Kevin Raber at the Luminous Landscape shares his impressions of the new Olympus 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens and he’s highly impressed. I have one as well and will soon share my take on this lens.

SLR Lounge posts a review of the Canon 7D Mark II based on its performance shooting sports and wildlife. The camera did well. I have a rental 7D II and will share my impressions here soon.

Imaging Resource reviewed the Samsung 16-50mm f/2-2.8 lens. The conclusion is mixed.

These have got to be the deals of the year: Hasselblad is offering up to 40% off its H5D cameras. The H5D-40, which normally goes for $18,500, is now $9,995. This sale lasts until December 24th.

Post Script

As you might have guessed, I’ve grown ambivalent about the value of these roundups. Around Photokina and PPE, when many new products were announced and reviewed, a daily roundup made sense. As things quieted down, a daily roundup seemed overkill.

Also, while I want to make money with this site, I don’t want to just push out deal alerts etc. That’s why I didn’t post all the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals that came over the transom. It just didn’t gel with me. I’m a journalist, not a marketer.

Finally, a lot of the things I could link to in terms of reviews are paper-thin in terms of new insights (often just another description of what the manufacturer already shared at the launch) or featured on sites that like every new piece of gear they touch. Since this roundup is a human endeavor and not a technical algorithm, I use my judgment to exclude articles that I judge filler and a waste of time. I hope to save your time as well.

Thus, I’m going to make this into a weekly roundup, either on Mondays or Fridays. Only in hectic times, like a run-up to a trade show, will I do this on a more frequent basis, as warranted.

In the meantime, I’d like to hear your feedback on whether this feature is of value to you and how I can best present it. Thanks.
