Photography Gear News & Reviews Roundup – January 19, 2015

Samyang/Rokinon announced their long-awaited 135mm f/2.0 ED UMC manual focus lens for Canon, Nikon, Samsung, Sony, Pentax and Olympus/Panasonic cameras. It will be available in two weeks for $549. The question is whether it can compete with the beauty that is the Canon 135mm f/2 L.

Fujifilm announced the X-A2 and the XQ2, further messing with my muddled brain when it comes to the lower end of Fuji’s X line up.

Happy to see a few others think the Sony A7 Mark II isn’t there yet, as I wrote last week. Ming Thein wonders why Sony hasn’t put more of its technology into this camera. The Phoblographer says Sony should have waited and released a move improved version of the camera. Gives it four stars, out of five. DPReview posts some samples from the camera.

Gordon Laing finished his Canon EOS 7D Mark II review. His conclusion is interesting, because it sums up the times in which we are living pretty well. He recommends the 7D II and calls it a ‘mini 1Dx,’ but also says a lot of people might be better served with a top mirrorless camera.

The Photography Blog reviewed the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II lens and concludes that it should be ‘highly recommended.’

SLRGear has a look at the bokeh-oriented Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2R APD lens. It concludes that it’s an excellent portrait lens, but doesn’t really make a strong case to choose this version over the regular 56mm Fuji.

SLRLounge reviews the Nikon 20mm f/1.8 G ED N lens. Highly recommends it.

As we’re heading toward the CP+ show starting in Japan February 12, we should see some long-awaited announcements from the major camera makers.
